Riding the Rails

Riding the Rails

Nora's first train ride. It was perfect. Amtrak took great care of us. When we got to the station, a porter took me with all of my baby paraphanalia to the automated ticket machine and then pre-boarded us on the best car. After loading all my stuff onto the train he called ahead to Philly and had a porter waiting to take us wherever. Fortunately, Adam was there to meet us too. What a great day. We saw the museum where Adam works and chilled at his sweet apartment. All this after we had a tasty brunch at nice little pub. Ahhh just what we needed.

As for the present, it is raining and has been since Sunday. Arghh.

Saw "Spanglish" last night. Thumbs up.

Miss Nora Goes to Washington

Miss Nora Goes to Washington

Guess who got her camera back? Yep, and just in time for Christmas, thanks Adam!
Here is a pic from our first day in DC we hit the Botanic gardens, the Museum of the American Indian, and the reflecting pool. Oh yeah and the neighborhood Starbucks, all in the space of about 2 hours. This was probably the best day we had in DC, the weather was nice and I hadn't been tapped out inthe Noracare category.

Alec is off work this week. It is his one and only week of vacation until September. Unfortunately, it is raining like crazy this week. There isn't a whole lot to do so we're basically lazing around. Yesterday we heard about this thing called googlewacking and we've become addicted. Here's how it works: you enter two words (real ones and no names, think scrabble rules) into google and the object is to get only ONE hit. This one guy wrote a whole standup routine and book about it and it is funny stuff. His words were DORK and TURNSPIT. Neither Alec nor I have succeeded as of yet but we're busy trying. Needless to say, if you call and the line is busy we're online...

Saturday Mornings

Saturday Morning
Originally uploaded by jegoffin.
So, since we've been back in SB, or Santa Barbara for the uninitiated, we've gone EVERY Saturday morning to D'Angelo Bread for breakfast. DO NOT get this place confused with the chain sandwich shop on the East coast by the same name. This place is classy, you know, $9 waffles, $5 lattes, and $2.25 croissants...worth every penny of butter. In fact, the late, great Julia Child used to come here on occasion for breakfast. How do I know this? Well, Alec used to work here too. This is where he perfect the art of cappuccino and ruined me for all inferior coffee. We started a family tradition of coming for breakfast here every Saturday morning and it is an indulgence we love. This moring we had soft poached eggs with toasted croissants and strawberry preserves. YUM. Nora likes croissants and it is a real sign of love that I allow her any of mine.
P.S. it was in the 70's today! :)

Remember When

Remember When

Still don't have my camera, so I'm reaching into the archives for this one. This picture is from exactly one year ago, give or take 4 days. Don't I look happy? I'd like to tell myself that the next time I'm pregnant I'll be happier, but let's be honest. How much can you look forward to gaining 35 pounds and then pushing aproximately 15 of those punds out at once.
Here's the funny thing though. I saw this pregnant woman at Gymboree yesterday and she looked sooo cute. Her daughter is 14 months and she looks about 5 months pregnant. WOW, I'm not sure when I'll be ready to do it all again. Speaking of Gymboree, I'm not sure we are going to continue after our free month is up because Nora just sits there and watches the other kids. Also, it is about a 10 minute drive away. In Boston this wouldn't really be a consideration, but here it is. I'm pretty sure we don't need to spend $175/12 weeks for her to watch other kids when we can go to the park for free.

Fuzzy at rest

Fuzzy at rest

This photo is about a month old. But it's the best I can do because I left my camera in DC, actually Philly. It is just the final chapter in a very horrible trip.
Here are the good things about the trip:
Spent time with Adam.
Watched Alison get married.
Visited with Rhiannon and Laura.
Saw the Hope diamond.
Taking the train was easy and fun.

Here are some of the bad things about the trip:
Taking care of Nora ALL the time.
Nora wouldn't go to other people.
I forgot my jean jacket at Alison's for two days.
I didn't get to talk to Alison at her wedding.
I felt like a huge imposition for the people I stayed with.
I had to buy another ticket so I could leave from Philly.
I got sick on the way home.
My head felt like it was going to explode on the return flight.
Audrey died.

Okay, I'm going to stop now.
I realized that I love pictures of Nora when she is sleeping. In fact I love Nora when she is sleeping. Do I love her more when she is sleeping? I'm not sure. I know that I love her most when she is sleepy and lays her little head on my shoulder and buries her face in my hair.

Sleeping in Paris

Sleeping in Paris

Another Audrey memory. Here sleeping in the window of our hotel in Vegas. The window overlooks the pool, the strip, and the Bellagio. This was definately her favorite stop over.
On another note, today was spent in the pursuit of diapers and Christmas presents...my life hold few distinctions. Nora is getting new teeth and she pulled my hair and bit me today. In return I let her crawl around the children's area of Bordersand pull out as many board books as she wanted.
I'm hoping for a day of sanity tomorrow.

Audrey

Happiest Cat
Originally uploaded by jegoffin.
My cat is gone. She disappeared on Monday and we assume she was taken by a coyote. Alec heard it happen but by the time he got there (in the dark) there was no trace. We keep hoping she'll return, but know in our hearts that she is gone. I miss her so much. Everywhere I look I remember her. She loved prowling around the yard and she'd chase me if I happened upon her. I see a sweater on the bed and now that she'd have nestled herself there for the afternoon. When I drive home, I expect to see her little face in the window...waiting for us. I think losing a pet is such a unique sort of loss. Your everyday companion who loved you unconditionally is suddenly gone...just like that.
